Gay rights fight has e a long way

IT'S hard to believe how far we have come since June 24, 1978.

That was the day a gay rights rally and march in Sydney turned violent as marchers were brutally set upon by NSW police and the GLBTIQ community fought back.

That was the birth of the mardi gras which is now celebrated by people of all ages, races, religions, sexuality and gender from around the planet.

Within 40 years it appears that, against all odds, we have won our hard-fought fight for acceptance and equality.

Thank you Australia. Mardi Gras 2018 will truly be a celebration - a celebration open to everybody.

It is fitting that this New Year's Eve, the Sydney fireworks will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the mardi gras and the granting of marriage equality.
